My “Blank” is Black

In the realm of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB), the concept of "proximity to Blackness" is a crucial lens through which we examine our understanding of racial dynamics and experiences. However, some individuals exploit this concept to excuse their own racist beliefs or actions. In this blog post, we will explore how people use their perceived proximity to Blackness as a shield to excuse racism, and shed light on the harmful consequences of such excuses.

Understanding Proximity to Blackness:

Proximity to Blackness refers to the degree of closeness an individual has to the experiences and struggles faced by Black communities. It recognizes that an individual's understanding and connection to Black experiences can vary, irrespective of their own racial background. However, it is essential to emphasize that proximity does not justify or excuse racist behavior.

The Fallacy of Excusing Racism through Proximity:

  • "I Have Black Friends": One common excuse used by individuals is the claim of having Black friends or acquaintances as evidence of their non-racist beliefs. While having diverse friendships is positive, it does not absolve one of racist attitudes or actions. True allyship involves continuous self-reflection and actively combating racism.

  • "My Family is Multicultural": Some may cite having family members from diverse racial backgrounds as a reason for not being racist. However, this proximity to Blackness does not negate the need to confront internalized biases or actively engage in anti-racist work.

  • "I Don't See Color": Claiming to be "color-blind" or not acknowledging race can be an attempt to evade discussions about racism. Such statements dismiss the realities faced by Black individuals and perpetuate a lack of accountability for addressing systemic racism.

The Impact of Excusing Racism:

  • Perpetuating Harmful Stereotypes: Using proximity to Blackness to excuse racism can reinforce harmful stereotypes and diminish the significance of systemic racism. It trivializes the lived experiences of Black individuals, eroding efforts to combat racial injustice.

  • Hindering Progress in DEIB Efforts: Excusing racism based on perceived proximity to Blackness can hinder the progress of DEIB initiatives. It diverts attention from the need to actively confront and dismantle systemic racism and cultivate true inclusivity.

  • Fostering Complacency: By employing proximity as a defense, individuals may become complacent in their understanding of racism. This complacency prevents them from taking meaningful action to combat racism and be true allies.

"My Blank is Black" is a flawed excuse that some individuals employ to avoid accountability for their racist beliefs and actions. Proximity to Blackness should not be used as a shield to excuse racism; instead, it should prompt us to engage in self-reflection, challenge our biases, and actively participate in anti-racist work.

To truly advance DEIB efforts, we must reject excuses and confront racism head-on. By centering the voices and experiences of Black communities, amplifying marginalized voices, and dismantling systemic racism, we can build a more equitable, inclusive, and anti-racist society. Let us recognize that proximity to Blackness should be a call to action, not a justification for complacency or prejudice. Together, we can forge a path towards a more just and compassionate world for all.
